Sheffield Wednesday are facing a 15-point deduction

Sheffield Wednesday are facing a major points deduction after failing to pay their players and staff on time again.

The Owls are in crisis under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, with the club in utter turmoil. Wednesday, who are currently in the relegation zone in the Championship, are facing a 15-point deduction.

Thats because the club failed to pay staff for the fifth time in the last seven months. And under EFL rules, each breach could trigger a three-point penalty.

Wages were due to be paid on Monday, September 29, but players at Hillsborough have not been paid, according to the Daily Mail. While staff received just 1,000 each for their months work.

However, its reported that such a heavy punishment is unlikely to be given, with mitigating factors needing to be taken into consideration regarding how other clubs have been treated in the past.

Sheffield Wednesday's players haven't been paid again

Wigan were slapped with an eight-point penalty in the 2023/24 season, with four of those points the enforcement of a suspended penalty. While Reading were docked four points after failing to pay players in 2023.

Its uncertain as of yet how serious the punishment handed to Wednesday will be, but its said that officials seeking to apply the rules will be wary of Wednesdays critical situation and need for a buyer.

Wednesday have been the recipient of several sanctions by the EFL, including a long-term transfer ban and a series of embargoes.

Debts are owed to other clubs and HMRC. But such is the complexity of the matter and Wednesdays ongoing issues, the case might not be heard before Christmas.

And the Owls can no longer sign any free agents unless they have fewer than 16 permitted players.
