Jockey Kelsey Hannan, 21, airlifted to hospital and put in induced coma after racing crash

Jockey Kelsey Hannan has reportedly been placed in an induced coma after falling off her horse.


The 21-year-old reportedly fell and lost consciousness at the Strathalbyn Racecourse in Australia. It's believed she had finished her race on horse Iva Dream when she clipped another horse's heels.


This unrided the jockey, who was placed in a neck brace and airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital. She was said to have been able to move her legs and hands and was reportedly placed in an induced coma.

Racing South Australia postponed the remaining races from the meet. The rest of the card is now intended to run next Friday.


Hannan, from New Zealand, had only just recovered from a broken jaw, and had ridden six winners in the past two weeks.

She had suffered the jaw injury in October, and need surgery to have a plate and screws inserted into the bone.

She had said: "It was very gutting but with horses these things happen and you can't really tell when it's going to happen.

"I've had surgery to put a plate and some screws in it, so now it's just a waiting game.

"The swelling is going down, I've got a big, ugly bruise on my chin but overall I think the healing is going OK. I'm on a puree diet for six weeks."
