World champion 'prepared' as British weather threatens to terrorise another sport

Less than two weeks after England's Ashes hopes were trashed by its own weather, the summer rain is threatening to cause havoc at another major sporting event

Britain's rainy summer is threatening to cause havoc at the British MotoGP this weekend.

Less than two weeks after inclement weather enabled Australia to retain the Ashes, another huge downpour is expected to take place during qualifying, the Tissot Sprint, and the MotoGP itself. However, current leader Francesco Bagnaia insists Ducatti are "prepared" for an almost inevitable British downfall.

In comparison with last season, where he trailed fierce rival Fabio Quartararo by 66 points, the Italian comes into the Silverstone race 35 points ahead of nearest competitor Jorge Martin.

But while the weather could prove to be one of the biggest obstacles, Bagnaia insists they will be more than ready.

My preparation for race weekend is just to be prepared for anything," Bagnaia said. "My mentality is being open to all situations possible. When you arrive in England, you have to be prepared for anything, more than other tracks.

You can have dry and then wet in ten minutes. Wednesday was incredible: it was raining, then it was sunny, then it was cloudy, then it was windy. It is difficult to understand. You have to be open. Some situations can disturb you. For a team, we were speaking about everything.

There was very little rain in the free practice sessions

"We will adjust to which style starts tomorrow morning. Everything will be set 100%."

According to the BBC Weather forecast, there is an 80% chance of rain for the qualifiers and a 70% chance during the terrifying sprint race. The picture looks less bleak for the premier race on Sunday, but a 30% chance of rain is still predicted.

Its very difficult every time in motor sport," said Mooney VR46 Racing Team driver Luca Marini when asked about the effect of rain. "In our sport this kind of situation can happen. In England it is like this. We try to prepare ourselves in the best way.

It is good that for everybody is the same. You have to be a bit smarter than the other." He added: We have two bikes. These help us a lot.

"You can prepare one for wet conditions and one for dry. Maybe you can play a little bit with both bikes if it is a mixed condition. You have to be smart, calm, try to analyse the situation and be better than the other."

The 2018 GP was cancelled because of the pouring rain

In 2018, organisers were forced to cancel the British GP after a huge downfall of rain rendered the track un-rideable. While teams are capable of adapting a bike to wet conditions within five minutes, the final decision will be made by Race Direction - the nerve centre of the MotoGP.

The official MotoGP rule book states: "Climatic conditions and their severity can never be accurately forecast Race Direction may react to specific situations by issuing different instructions. All instructions will be displayed on timekeeping monitors and teams will be informed by IRTA staff."
