SEGA video game character Sonic the Hedgehog waved the MotoGP field home over the weekend in their first race since F1's owners took over the sport to 'help it grow'

Sonic the Hedgehog took some time away from his battles with Dr Eggman to wave home the MotoGP field at the Circuit of the Americas.

The beloved SEGA character was on hand to wave the chequered flag as Spaniard Maverick Vinales took the crown. OK, so it wasn't the real Sonic, let's be serious, but it was a man dressed in the costume.

"Things I'd never thought I'd see, let alone tweet about," one fan joked. While a second replied: "Someone really needs to make a '0 context MotoGP account'..."

Liberty Media, which controls the commercial rights to F1, purchased MotoGP this month for $4.5bn (3.61bn) - and they've wasted no time in securing their first commercial deal.

The deal is part of a fresh promotional push behind a new Sonic X Shadow Generations video game and the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie - both of which are set to be released later this year.

Sonic wasn't the only SEGA-based attraction in Austin, Texas, and the Japan-based video game maker also supplied a real-life motorcycle based on the Chopper that Shadow - another character - rides in the game.

SEGA is taking the fantasy bike on tour around the world this year as part of their promotional push, the MotoGP race at Circuit of the Americas was only the first stop on the tour. Fans can also get a look at the bike when it stops off at Silverstone later this year as the British circuit hosts the F1.
