Supercars driver Mark Winterbottom was shoved and shouted at when he tried to apologise for causing a chaotic crash at the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

On the opening lap of race 28, Winterbottom collided with Erebus Racing rival Will Brown, forcing him to career into the pit exit barrier. Brown's car was left wrecked by the subsequent damage, although mercifully, the driver himself escaped unharmed.

Winterbottom later headed to the Erebus garage to apologise for what transpired, but found Brown wasn't in the mood to forgive and forget. Instead, he tore into his rival, whilst Team Principal Barry Ryan shoved Winterbottom on more than one occasion.

Footage of the argument clearly showed Winterbottom saying sorry as he attempted to explain his actions, but he was met with a volatile response: You went from the left to the right. You dont understand how big it was, ranted Brown.

I understand if you hit someone in the hairpin, its a little bit f*****g crap. You didnt even apologise on TV so youre obviously not sorry. You literally turned into me."

And he even accused his Australian compatriot of intentionally causing the incident: That was honestly one of the biggest crashes Ive ever had. I was lying on the ground like three minutes after. Theres nothing you can say - you deliberately did it.

Ryan went a step further, opting to get physical as he twice pushed Winterbottom away. And he was still incensed later on when addressing the media.

He argued that the No 18 Holden ZB Commodore driver should now have his competitive licence revoked, adding: Its crystal clear that he did it on purpose, before confirming Brown's vehicle would now go back to Melbourne to be repaired.

Winterbottom himself admitted: It looks bad, it always looks bad when someone ends up like that. I can see why (Brown) would be angry and disappointed." As for the inevitable flak, he added: Ill cop it, glad hes okay, thats the main thing."
