Just two days prior, the American racing series released a heart-wrenching statement: "We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport's greatest and fiercest drivers," it read.

"He was 41 years old. We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community."

Busch was scheduled to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend, but on the day of his passing, it was announced that he had been hospitalised due to "a severe illness" and would not be participating.

Tributes have since flooded in for the motorsport icon, who clinched NASCAR Cup Series titles in 2015 and 2019.

With a total of 63 victories, Busch ranks ninth on the all-time list, with 56 of those wins achieved during his 15-year tenure at Joe Gibbs Racing.

Following his tragic passing, a poignant joint-statement was issued on behalf of his family, Richard Childress Racing team and NASCAR.

It said: "Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans.

"Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR's highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series.
