A NASCAR driver with 'balls the size of watermelons' produced one of the most iconic moments in the series history with an incredible wall-riding move that saw him gain five places on the final lap.

With the NASCAR Cup at the final play-off stage, Ross Chastain needed to finish in the top five to secure a place in the Championship, the traditional end-of-season race which sees the top four drivers on level points, with the highest finisher taking the crown.

It looked all over for Chastain, who was 10th on the final tour of the 500-lap race in Martinsville, the penultimate race of the season.

However, Chastain had other ideas as he audaciously rode the wall on the outside of the track and floored it, slingshotting past the five cars he needed to keep his title hopes alive in jaw-dropping fashion.

One fan, who filmed the incredible move from the stands, tweeted: I cannot fathom what I just witnessed. Greatest moment in #NASCAR history. Ross Chastain has balls the size of [watermelons emoji].

The commentators were equally stunned, with one yelling: I have never seen anything like that before in my life.

Meanwhile, disbelieving sports presenter Pat McAfee simply asked: Is this real?

One fan thought he was watching a computer game, tweeting: I think he thought he was playing NASCAR Heat on the PS4!!! Madness!

Another said: That is one of the wildest things Ive ever seen. Wow! What a move.

However, another fan asked if that type of move should be legal: Did it look cool? Hell yeah. Should it be legal to do that? Probably not, if for no other reason than, once you let people do that, every race will become a shambles, and imagine the damage bill for right-side suspension.
