MCC suspend three members after Long Room confrontation with Aussie Ashes team

England cricketers were fuming over a controversial stumping during the 2nd Ashes Test with Australia facing the wrath of the Lord's crowd on their way into the Long Room

MCC has suspended three members following a Long Room confrontation during the 2nd Ashes Test.

The friction occurred on the final day at Lord's when Jonny Bairstow was controversially dismissed via stumping. With England chasing down 371 to level the series, Bairstow ducked to avoid a bouncer from the final ball of the over and subsequently exited his crease assuming the ball had become dead.

However, Alex Carey had already tossed the ball toward the stumps and a wicket was contentiously awarded by the umpire after a review from the visitors.

As Baistow trudged off the field, chants of "Same old Aussies, always cheating" rang round the arena and with lunch called shortly after it made for some unsavoury scenes as both teams headed into the dressing rooms.

The disagreements continued between supporters and players as Australia's fielders entered the long room as tempers flared in St John's Wood. Sky Sports cameras showed batsman Usman Khawaja arguing with a posh member of the club and MCC has since released a statement suspending three members from Lord's.

"Further to the earlier statement, MCC can confirm it has suspended three Members identified from earlier today. They will not be permitted back to Lords whilst the investigation takes place and were informed of this by MCC Chief Executive, Guy Lavender, this evening.

Jonny Bairstow lost his wicket in controversial fashion

"We maintain that the behaviour of a small number of Members was completely unacceptable and whilst there was no suggestion by Pat Cummins in the post-match press conference that there was any physical altercation, it remains wholly unacceptable to behave in such a way, which goes against the values of the Club.

"MCC condemns the behaviour witnessed and once again we re-iterate our apology to Cricket Australia. We are thoroughly disappointed to be talking about poor behaviour when the Long Room, as stated by Pat Cummins himself, is otherwise renowned for being 'really welcoming'. It has been a thrilling day to finish off a wonderful five days of Test cricket."
