The world's richest tennis star Jessica Pegula is loving the adulation that comes with being the highest ranked player in the United States.

World No.3 Pegula is now the top-ranked American across the both men's and women's game and has made over 5.6million in an accomplished career on the court.

But the 29-year-old - targeting glory at the prestigious Miami Open this week - also boasts a mega net worth that even dwarfs tennis icons such as Serena Williams and Roger Federer.

That is owed to Pegula's father Terry - who made billions from oil and gas and is said to be worth up to 5.5bn.

Billionaire Terry Pegula, 71, has built a vast business empire that includes ownership of NFL franchise Buffalo Bills and NHL ice hockey team Buffalo Sabres.

But while heiress Pegula is sitting on a huge fortune, she is firmly focused on creating her own legacy on the tennis court.

The in-form New Yorker has emerged as one of the elite players in women's tennis and is hoping to break her Grand Slam duck this season.

Pegula is now looking to book her spot in the quarter-finals in Miami on Monday and is thrilled with her position at the summit of the American standings.

"It has been very rewarding and fun to hear it announced before every single match. I think its so much fun," she said.

"Especially in the States, you really see people respond to that. Even No. 1 womens player. Im like, No, Im the No. 1 mens and womens player in the U.S.

Its just fun. I think its a cool thing that I get to say and I get to hear. People really obviously respond. People that dont even watch tennis, when they hear that, its like an automatic, 'Oh, wow, you must be really good'.

"I think its gained a lot of respect throughout the tennis community, tennis fans, even ex-players, people that work the events. Its surreal. Its bizarre."
