Team Europe celebrated into the early hours as they enjoyed Champagne and mocked Donald Trump after a nail-biting Ryder Cup victory over Team USA

After a nail-biting singles session, Team Europe had one question for Donald Trump: "Are you watching?"

Europe went into Sunday's singles round needing just two points to take the Ryder Cup - after Viktor Hovland's injury allowed them invoke the little-known "envelope rule". Shane Lowry was the man of the moment when he knocked in the putt that retained the trophy on the 18th green.

And the celebrations had started even before the last golfers had made their way to the clubhouse. Justin Rose held aloft the trophy as McIlroy holding the camera, led the chants towards Trump.

The US President responded on his Truth Social social media app: "Yes, Im watching. Congratulations!"

Chants of "are you watching, Donald Trump" also erupted from the grandstand, drowning out an interview with Luke Donald.

The chaos continued with the trophy lift as Lowry briefly relinquished the trophy to a spectator before it was snatched back.

While Rasmus Hojgaard, the rookie who won no points, had to be pushed forwards to take his turn with the cup.

The sun set on Bethpage Black, but the joyous Europe stars stayed out on the grass started their celebrations, spraying Champagne all over their team-mates.

Celebrations wouldn't end on the 18th and they continue into the night as McIlroy led the team through boozy chants: "Europe's on fire, America is terrified," they declared to the tune of Freed from Desire by Italian singer Gala.

That was followed by the tune of the Cranberries smash hit Zombie: Hes in your heeee-ad, in your heeee-ad, Rory! Rory! Rory!"

They also broke out into a round of 'We Are the Champions' as Champagne and beer were free flowing.

It was an amazing Ryder Cup from the Europeans, from the talk of an all-time blowout before a Sunday session that almost saw it all unravel to the crowd tensions between McIlroy and the Americans.

"Look," McIlroy said. "I don't think we should ever accept that behaviour in golf. I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week.

"Golf has the ability to you unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons. It teaches you etiquette. It teaches you how to play by the rules. It teaches you how to respect people.

"Sometimes this week we didn't see that. So no, this should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup.

"But you know, we will be making sure to say to our fans in Ireland in 2027 that what happened here this week is not acceptable, and for me, it's - you know, come and support your home team. Come and support your team.

"I think if I was an American, I would be annoyed that peopleI didn't hear a lot of shouts for Scottie today, but I heard a lot of shouts against me. It's like, support your players. That's the thing."
