Prince Harry hits back over 'too posh for football' jibe on live TV

The Royal clapped back after James Corden asked if he was 'too posh' to play football at school, during a post-World Cup final after-show on Fox

Prince Harry was left red faced after a dig was made about him being "too posh" to play football during a post World Cup final TV show.

Harry, appearing with host James Corden on Fox's 'After Hours FIFA World Cup Show', was discussing whether he had played football when he was younger, when the Gavin and Stacey actor joked the Prince may have been 'too posh' for the sport.

The Royal, who spent five years at 63,000-a-year Eton College, hit back at the playful jibe by admitting that although his school was incredibly "posh", this simply meant they had more sporting options.

Harry said: "It was such a posh school that everything was an option. There was a football team.".

The Royal even claimed to have been on his prep school's first team when he was little, although admitted that by the time he joined Eton he had slipped somewhat down the pecking order.

He said: "You know what, in prep school, I was on the first team. And then I went to the bigger school, and I ended up on the E team. Big A team, down to E team. So that didn't feel very good."

Prince Harry famously attended Wetherby Prep School in London, which charges parents 35,000 annually to educate their seven to thirteen-year-olds.

The US audience was left in stitches hearing about Harry's fall from the As to the Es, with one individual heard cracking up over the exchange.

Addressing the laughter, Harry said: "You found that really funny, didn't you?", prompting more chuckles.

Despite having a reputation as preferring traditionally posher sports like rugby and cricket, Eton has a rich tradition of playing football, with a team made up of Eton alumni winning the FA Cup back on two occasions back in the 19th century.

The side, called 'Old Etonians', played Clapham Rovers in 1879 and Blackburn Rovers in 1882, beating both sides 1-0 to lift the iconic piece of silverware. Their star player Lord Arthur Kinnaird would go on to become one of football's first superstars winning the FA Cup five times.

More recently, former Reading forward Basil Tuma, ex-Arsenal academy player Zac Shuaib and Ipswich Town starlet Tudor Mendel-Idowu have also attended the prestigious private school, which boasts more than 40 football pitches.
