St Helens rugby team escorted away by cops as 'terror threat' is made during game

A rugby league team were escorted out of a stadium after St Helens received a serious threat through a terrorism claim online, which claimed the team would be harmed

A rugby league team was escorted away after the team received a "terrorist threat". Despite Storm Amy, League Leaders Shield winners Hull KR hosted St Helens at Craven Park this evening.

However, the team was escorted after a worrying threat. Taking to social media, someone wrote: "St Helens have just confirmed they have received a terrorist threat to their social media account during the game. It has been reported to police who are now escorting the team coach".

Another added: "St Helens has received a terrorist threat made to their Instagram account, during the game. The claim was apparently that the whole team would be killed. It is being taken seriously and St Helens bus have a police escort".

A third noted: "Not the end to the press conference we expected but St Helens are currently being escorted by Police as there has been a terror threat to their social media account that is being treated with the utmost seriousness".

The nature of the threat has not been revealed and St Helens have not yet released an official statement.

The game was finished before the team was escorted from the stadium grounds. Photos from the event show police officers stood around the stadium and next to the buses used to transport players.

St Helens were playing against Hull KR tonight (October 4) for tonight's Betfred Super League play-off semi-final.

The Robins set up a rematch of last season's Grand Final against Wigan Warriors next Saturday (6pm) with a powerful first-half display and then withstood the inevitable Saints fightback in the second half.

Hull KR coach Willie Peters told BBC TV: "The second half wasn't pretty. In the first half I was really happy with how we suffocated the opposition.

"We're looking forward to the week ahead, and the players deserve it. I can't wait. We've been in a Challenge Cup loss and a Grand FInal loss and you always get your best learning when you lose.

"We've learned a lot but on-field it will come down to moments and we have to improve on that [performance].

"We've got an opportunity to go after the treble and we're not going to shy away from it, we're going to go after it and lean into that. It will be a great challenge against a champion side".
