Conor McGregor screamed in agony after he suffered a horror ankle break during his UFC trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier.

The Irishman was looking to avenge his defeat to Poirier from earlier this year but a freak accident at the end of the first round forced a stoppage to the fight.

McGregor went tumbling on his ankle in what looked to be a visible break of the bone.

The Notorious was immediately treated by doctors after he flagged the damage to the referee.

McGregor was then told to stay still and not move his leg by officials, who swiftly moved his fragile leg into a brace, before he was carried off stage on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital in Las Vegas.

Poirier had dominated the opening round after dealing with a couple of early leg kicks from his rival.

But McGregor's fight began to unravel after he failed with an attempted guillotine.

Poirier then dominated the round from top position before allowing McGregor to stand up - and that was when tragedy struck for the former two-weigh champ.

McGregor missed with a punch and fell backwards when his ankle appeared to snap.

But the beating - and the ankle break - were not going to stop the post-fight trash talking.

Poirier said in his interview that he believes that McGregor's injury was not an accident - and that he snapped it when he delivered one of those fierce leg kicks at the start of the fight.

He claims that he felt McGregor's leg crack in one of the kicks and it then gave way towards the end of the round.

The insults then continued, as Poirier branded McGregor a "dirtbag" for comments that he made relating to 'murder' before the fight.

He also claimed that McGregor was illegally grabbing his gloves.

Poirier said: "I can take it, there's no holds barred with the trash talk, but murder is something you don't clown around about and this guy was saying that he was going to murder me, he was going to kill me.

"You don't talk like that to people.

"I hope this man gets home safe to his beautiful family.

"He did hit me with a good cross, I was a little bit buzzed, I didn't see it, but he clipped me.

"The takedown was easy but his fingers were in my gloves and he was pulling me down for the leg kicks. This guy's a dirtbag."

McGregor then hit back and said: "I was boxing the bleedin' head off him, kicking the bleedin' leg off him. Usual s***e, dive to close the distance.

"This is not over. I have to take this outside with him, it's on.

"There was no check. There was not one of them was a check. Your wife is in my DM's.

"Hey baby, hit me back up and I'll chat to you later on. We'll be having an afterparty at the Wynn nightclub baby."

McGregor was carried on a stretcher out of the arena and to a local Las Vegas hospital.

Since McGregor left the arena, UFC chief Dana White has said that a fourth fight between the pair will happen - but only after Poirier faces Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title.
