Gears of War 4 launched last week but on top of the glowing reviews it received, Rod Fergusson's Project Scorpio chatter, Microsoft also announced that the Xbox game will also get it's very own film in development at Universal.
A Gears of War film has been on the cards for quite a few years, but that project had repeatedly stalled with no talent or distributors attached to it.
Luckily, we had some time to talk to Rod Fergusson, a veteran of the Gears of War series who's been there from the beginning, who most recently oversaw the release of Gears of War 4 with The Coalition.
"In the very, very beginning when we were making the game we were saying Gears 1,2,3 is to Tim Burton's Batman as Gears of War 4 is to Christopher Nolans Batman," explained Fergusson.
"As we began to execute against that shorthand, we found that was not really what we wanted. It was a good shorthand but not what we wanted to make or play and took it self too seriously, too unrelenting.
"We ended up with this sweet spot in the middle."
Where then does Fergusson think the Gears film should pitch itself?
The tone of Gears 1-3 and the Nicholson-esk Batman films or something more contemporary Gears 4 and the Christopher Nolan Batman?
"I think its somewhere in the middle. I look at The Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy and I think those kind of films are what appeal to me from a tone perspective.
"I watched the Ultimate Edition of Batman VS Superman the other day and I dont think it was as bad as people said, I was expecting something horrible. But the thing for me was that theres 6 to 8 moments where I was thinking, If they'd only allowed themselves some one liners or to make a joke of the situation to recognise theyre in this crazy world. Otherwise it's all too unbelievable.
"When you have super-fantastic, over the top, crazy stuff happening where none of it makes sense at all, and you treat it as if its so important and so real, to me its where I disconnect.
"So I look at The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and those types of films because it has serious moments, it has action and funny moments it has a good overall tone.
"In my perfect world Id like to have something along those lines [for Gears]."
As for who Fergusson would want behind the lens or in front of the camera, that's completely up for grabs, as despite his love for The Avengers and Guardians, he's open to collaborating with just about anyone.
"I dont have that dream guy or cast," explains Fergusson.
"The thing that surprises me is that when you look at, say Guardians, if you go on paper and look at James Gunn as director, there's nothing in his resume that says he can do that."
"There's nothing that would suggest Gunn is perfect for directing that Sci-Fi, Action, Comedy film Guardians became."
"To me thats why you get into these relationships with studios and making movies, because we're on the outside and dont know enough. We go for the obvious and the director and star whos done it all before.
"I think what you really want is people who break the mould or at least have a surprise - so I'll never play the whos your dream cast or director game.
"I'm looking forward to working with a great partner to help figure that out, so we can reach another audience to tell different stories within our universe."
