PlayStation 5 Pro will get even better next year as boss teases major upgrade

The PS5 Pro is one of our favourite consoles, and it's going to get even better in 2025 thanks to a major upgrade to its upscaling tech here's all we know so far

PS5 Pro is getting easier to recommend

The PlayStation 5 Pro launched back in November, but it took a few months to see its promises realised as developers got to work with the new hardware.

We ended up giving it a 4.5/5 in our review, noting that despite the price, it was finally a console that's easy to recommend.

One of the console's big features, its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) which allows for AI upscaling to higher resolutions, is expected to get a big upgrade in the coming months, according to a new interview with lead system architect Mark Cerny.

Speaking with Tom's Guide, Cerny explained that new upscaling tech will be a "drop-in replacement for the current PSSR".

Cerny teased a partnership with AMD (the same company which will work with Xbox on its next generation hardware) back in March.

The idea is for both companies to help produce better machine learning algorithms for improved upscaling that doesn't come at the cost of frame rate.

AMD has already released its FSR technology, and Sony is free to release its own side of the tech, too. Cerny is impressed by how quickly things have progressed, too.

This is not for proprietary technology, Cerny said.

This is really trying to move the industry forward. Obviously, we want to use these technologies on our consoles, but these technologies are available to any of AMDs customers freely.

Speaking about the new upscaling tech coming next year, Cerny explained that its not a cut-down [version] of the algorithm."

Its the full-fat version of the co-developed super resolution that well be releasing on PS5 Pro," he added, suggesting it's closer to 'full-fat' FSR 4 than we may have expected.

While AMD could launch new graphics chips, next year, Cerny doesn't expect a new PlayStation generation just yet.

"AMD is moving extremely quickly," Cerny said. "What I'm trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my time frame is multi-year here."
