PS5 to bring back fan-favourite feature this week and there's an added surprise

The PS5 is getting its classic themes back, but there's also one more feature that'll be a huge help for just about every gamer here's all we know about Audio Focus

Which PlayStation generation was your favourite?

It feels like ages ago, such is the quality of gaming releases in 2025, but back in December Sony released some incredible custom themes for the PS5 that took users through PlayStation history before ripping them away not long after.

Now, Sony has promised to bring the themes back this week, meaning you can return to the PS1, PS2, PS3 or PS4 eras of the manufacturer any time you want.

The news follows yesterday's reveal of PS5's big Fall exclusive, Ghost of Yotei, getting a release date, and the tease of more PS5 Pro upgrades to come for Sony's priciest PlayStation. And the good news doesn't stop there, as the latest system firmware update includes something for audiophiles, too.

PlayStation brings back nostalgic themes

Originally revealed alongside the trailer above, the themes span each home console in PlayStation's illustrious history after fans had been crying out for fresh themes a la the PS4.

Sony has, to its credit, added animated backgrounds for big titles like Days Gone, Demon's Souls, and God of War Ragnarok, but these are the first themes since the console launched in 2020 to convert the entire front-end (aside from the PS5 Pro's exclusive theme).

"During our 30th anniversary celebrations, we surprised our fans with a limited time selection of nostalgic customization features for the PS5 System UI to honor the four PlayStation consoles that paved the way for PS5: PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4," a new blog post explains.

"Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from our community, were happy to bring back the look and feel of the four console designs for players to customize the home screen on PS5!"

You'll be able to find the themes in the settings, under the Appearance option. Also new are a series of audio presets which are ideal for anyone with hearing issues, or just looking to gain a competitive advantage in games.

The new Audio Focus update "increases immersion by providing presets to amplify soft sounds to meet your hearing preferences, ensuring a clearer audio experience when using headphones or headsets".

Sony has promised four presets, each of which can be tweaked between Weak, Medium, and Strong levels:

You can even adjust the level of support in each side of your headset, too.
