Wildest Assassin's Creed kills from Pope to man stabbed in head with hidden blade

Assassin's Creed turns 17 years old today, so we're taking a blood-spattered walk down memory as we check out some of its most infamous fictional kills of real people

Assassin's Creed has been around a whopping 17 years today, with Ubisoft's stealth title turning into an action-adventure throughout that time.

One thing that's never waivered, however, is the way it deftly weaves its fiction throughout historical locations and figures, as our heroic hooded Assassins do battle with the Templar order over the course of centuries.

That puts them at odds with some of history's most famous figures, and in doing so, the series has pushed us to deal justice via the Hidden Blade to some real-life figures. We also await who will be slain in the forthcoming instalment Shadows, but here are some of the most memorable deaths across the last seventeen years.

Charles Gabriel Sivert - Assassin's Creed Unity

The series' debut on PS4 and Xbox One was full of bugs, but with the benefit of time offered a genuinely impressive experience with some of the most memorable kills in the series.

One such baddie to meet Arno's blade was Charles Gabriel Sivert, a real-life military man who sets the game's plot in motion by framing our protagonist for murder.

Arno catches up to him after two years, and the kill itself is one of the more brutal in the series. Arno infiltrates a meeting spot, posing as Sivert's contact in a confession booth. There he slays his target through the head with his hidden blade in a kill that's not for the faint of heart.

Stefano Da Bagnone - Assassin's Creed 2

A real-life conspirator against the Medici brothers and member of the Pazzi group that moved against the ruling family of Florence, Stefano de Bagnone was dangerous but cowardly in equal measure.

Following the assassination attempt on the Medici brothers, Stefano flees to Tuscany where Ezio finds him and sneaks among the other monks to evade capture and eliminate his target.

In real life, da Bagnone suffered an even worse fate - having his ears and nose removed, before being hanged in 1478.

Bartholomew Roberts - Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

In another universe, Bartholomew Roberts and Black Flag's protagonist Edward Kenway might have been friends. They're both similar in that they're pirates from the same part of the world, both dragged into the Assassin and Templar struggle through a series of surprising events.

Acting as a Sage, Roberts is burdened with the memories of the Isu (an ancient race). Edward impales Roberts with a rope dart aboard his ship, the Royal Fortune, and his body is thrown overboard to stop the Templars gaining knowledge from it.

The real Bartholomew Roberts sanked over 400 ships in his pirating career, giving him the nickname Black Bart. He was killed in battle after his crew, celebrating a big haul the day before, were drunk, and he was shot in the throat.

Julius Caesar - Assassin's Creed Origins

A man whose death is arguably just as well-known as his life, Julius Caesar appears in Assassin's Creed Origins and is dispatched by Aya, before his senators also stab him following an airing of grievances at a council meeting.

It's an unforgettable scene that ties the Assassin's Creed mythos in with the demise of one of the most iconic figures in history, and it's nice that it's Aya who gets to get final revenge for the death of Khemu, her son, after Bayek has led most of the game.

Rodrigo Borgia - Assassin's Creed 2

Rodrigo Borgia is the mastermind behind the events that see Ezio's family killed in the inciting incident of Assassin's Creed 2, but it takes a while to catch up to him.

By the time you do, he's become the literal Pope of the Catholic Church, making killing him a challenge. Ezio defeats him, though, after fighting the staff-wielding Pope with a group of other assassins. He later dies after being poisoned by his son.
