When is a bin more than just a bin? when it's made by Joseph and Joseph, apparently.
I had been on the hunt for a smart bin for a while, and wasn't really sure what that meant to start with. Most bins are now pedal bins, so that's not exactly a revolutionary feature. Several bins open when you go near them a novelty at first, but it quickly wears off when it inevitably malfunctions and keeps opening and closing like a it's playing a game of Pacman.
But enter the Joseph and Joseph Intelligent Waste Titan Trash Compactor Kitchen Bin. The 30l bin, priced at 177, actually holds up to 90l thanks to the smartest feature on any bin I've ever seen.

The sleekly-designed unit comes with a handle but it's not just any handle. The handle actually lifts over the rubbish, unleashing two flat pieces of hard plastic inside the bin that then squash down all your rubbish and change the 30l capacity to a whopping 90l.
In this day and age, when every council around the country is cutting back on rubbish collections, this feature is smart in more ways than one.
It cuts back on the need for emptying your bin every few days, it cuts back on the cost of buying rolls of bin bags every two weeks, and it cuts back on the amount of effort and struggle it takes to constantly schlep an over full bin bag out of your bin while trying to to yeet it across the kitchen in a fit of rage.
And to make it even more pleasant, the bin has a built in odour filter which really does cup back on unwanted smells and fruit flies that inevitably hang around full bins.
It works with their own bags, or every day supermarket bags, and has left me looking lovingly at my kitchen bin rather than staring sulkingly at the vile mess I used to have.
The only negative I have for this is that the instructions are not clear on how you attach the bags to the compacting arms - it's been a month and I am yet to fully figure this out.
Again, don't say but it's just a bin because this is anything but a just a bin and for that reason it's getting a full 9/10, as there's nothing like it on the market.
There are cheaper alternatives out there - mainly from own-brand makes, such as Amazon, but nothing with this exact feature.
