The Dark Pictures Switchback VR review: A one-trick-pony PS5 horror rollercoaster

The makers of Until Dawn join the PSVR2 bandwagon with a new horror game that's set on a spooky rollercoaster ride

The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR

Virtual reality fans have been blessed recently thanks to the PSVR2.

The new console-based headset is a joy to use and already boasts a decent library with hits like Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Moss and Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxys Edge.

And horror fans can now enjoy this rather odd new title from the makers of PS4 hit Until Dawn.

The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR is billed as an immersive horror shooter.

Leveraging the sensory power of PSVR2, developer Supermassive Games puts you on a rollercoaster where you fight for your life against all manner of creepy beasts and calculated killers.

You roll through various levels set in blood-covered old hotels and ghost ships as monsters attack you.

The monsters come thick and fast

Some almost-humans crawl the walls above, dropping down to attack, while other undead zombies come running straight for you arms outstretched.

Youre armed with two handguns, which can be upgraded to machine guns when a particularly decent shot hits the odd kit crate as you zoom past on the rails.

Its all frantic stuff and pumps along at a swift speed, slowing and stopping on occasion to deliver sandbox moments where youre being attacked from all angles.

You feel every bump, drop and gun recoil thanks to the PSVR2 controllers haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

And theres a cool feature in the headsets eye tracking technology. Once you blink, some monsters come closer in attack, so youve got to try to get away without blinking too much.

Headset rumble also means youll find yourself ducking and diving away from passing beams and overturned buses to avoid collision.

The visuals come in 4K detail with 3D audio support to help spook you out with extra immersion.

You gun with both hands

It all feels like a classic House of the Dead-style horror romp on rollercoaster wheels.

Its limited in that youre stuck within the confines of your cart and thus always in the same position but the swerves help to make it a more kinetic experience.

And the gunplay is pretty spot-on, shooting is easy and accurate.

Switchback VR is fun, and tries to make the most of the PSVR2 but its wildly bouncing storyline and one-trick-pony gameplay means youll tire of it fairly quickly.

An okay if not amazing VR title for the Playstation.
