The Daily Star: News with a Wink

Airline launches new economy cabin with full-sized beds for passengers on flights

Air New Zealand, which already offers the economy SkyCouch, has revealed its new Dreamliner design with full-sized sleeping pods for economy passengers and Economy Stretch with greater leg room

When flying long-haul its often hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds cheaper to fly economy rather than business class.

But this means that holidaymakers can end up stuck in cramped seats that recline a few inches for hours at a time sometimes a whole day.

It can be difficult to sleep, feel comfortable or relax when youre sat in a tiny chair with nowhere to lie down.

It seems airlines have come to the same conclusion and one forward thinking company is looking for the solution to the economy problem.

And, from 2024, Brits flying to Australia or New Zealand may be reclining in luxury even if they book an economy seat.

Air New Zealand has shaken up its design on its new Dreamliners which are due to enter circulation in just two years, reports news.com.au.

Passengers will now be able to get the best sleep in the sky no matter their cabin class.

Business Premier Luxe seats are available with plenty of space and privacy, while economy travellers can enjoy the worlds first airline sleep pods outside of business with the Skynest.

Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty, explained: Skynest was an idea born out of looking at how we could offer a lie-flat option for Economy and Premium Economy travellers, and its going to be a real game-changer, adding more flexibility to the economy travel experience.

Passengers will be able to lie down and stretch out in one of six pods for part of the long flights.

The pods include a full-sized pillow, sheets and blankets for ultimate comfort as well as ear plugs and rest-designed lights.

Plus, a separate reading light, ventilation outlet for fresh air and USB outlets for charging.

Leanne added: Research shows us the first night away from home is the hardest to get a good nights sleep so everything we do on-board is to help create a sense of calm from the lighting and sleep ritual including sleepy teas and balms, to the healthier food choices and breathable fabrics.

The cost of the Skynest has yet to be announced.

Another seating option to be launched is Economy Stretch which gives more legroom and greater recline than standard seats.

There are further options like the SkyCouch(Image: Air New Zealand)

Leanne noted: Our customers have highlighted the need for more space and comfort, so Economy Stretch is one of our many answers to this.

Our new cabin experience is set to be world class, and we know our customers will love it.

Air New Zealand is already ahead of the game when it comes to comfort as they current sell access to the SkyCouch on some flights.

The Sky Couch is part of an upgrade available on Air New Zealand, which transforms a row of seats into a full flat bed thats perfect for napping.

It costs around 105 and can fit two adults or an adult and a child.

You can book the Sky Couch alone you dont have to share with a stranger or a Sky Couch with an additional seat.
