Danny Dyer's fans have said they "can't wait" after he revealed he'd landed a major new role.
The TV favourite - famed for his previous portrayal of Mick Carter on BBC soap EastEnders - has confirmed that he will join David Morrissey and Motaz Malhees in new Channel 4 drama The Siege, which is about the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege.
The 48-year-old actor will play heroic PC Trevor Lock in the programme, which is based on Ben Macintyre's book and features a script penned by Will Smith. The Siege will delve into the events that transpired over 45 years ago in South Kensington, London.
Danny will step into the shoes of the police officer who was on duty when he and 25 others were taken hostage. The situation reached its climax when the SAS stormed the building during a live television broadcast after a six-day standoff, resulting in the death of five out of the six terrorists.
Joining Danny in the series, which starts shooting this week, are Downton Abbey's Lewis Doyle and Alex Jennings from The Crown, reports the Mirror.
BAFTA-winning director Lewis Arnold will be at the helm of the six-part series, with Patrick Spencer, known for his work on Mr Bates vs The Post Office, serving as executive producer.
Channel 4's Chief Content Officer Ian Katz said: "The Iranian Embassy siege and the daring raid which ended it was an iconic moment that forged the ferocious reputation of the modern SAS.
"The show is a heart-stopping, emotional thriller that reveals the little-known motivations of the hapless hostage-takers and the very human reality of what went on inside the embassy as the world looked on and Britain's most lethal soldiers practised their high-stakes assault.
"It will change the way people understand the siege and reveal how close the famous SAS operation came to disaster."
The series comes less than a year after PC Lock's death at 85.
A Police Federation spokesperson had previously stated: "PC Lock is remembered for calming his fellow hostages during the siege, acting as an intermediary between the terrorists and the security forces that ringed the building and - as the embassy was stormed - tackling the leading gunman.
"PC Lock was awarded the George Medal for his 'outstanding courage, sustained bravery, calmness and devotion to duty.' We could not have said it any better."
Fans were thrilled to hear of Danny's new role, with many posting on Instagram to congratulate him after he shared a casting announcement.
"Can not wait," said one, as another posted: "Man, you are on fire."
Someone else exclaimed: "WOAHHHHH!!! So cool." "Brilliant, look forward to this," said another fan.
