Emmerdale star Ned Porteous shares what's next for Joe Tate - 'drama, surprise and pain'

Joe Tate is at the centre of a very dramatic Emmerdale storyline, where his fiance Dawn Fletcher plans to leave him at the altar and run away with her ex-husband Billy

Joe Tate is the centre of a very dramatic storyline

Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) hasnt had an easy ride since his first appearance in the Dales back in 1995. The character left the show in 2004 with his aunt Zoe following the death of his dad. For 13 years, we heard nothing from Joe until he returned to the village seeking revenge for his dads death.

This all ended badly for Joe who ended up faking his own death. Fast forward to 2026, and Joe is back and is set to marry his pregnant fiance Dawn.

Unbeknownst to Joe, Dawn (Olivia Bromley) plans to leave him at the altar to flee with her ex-husband Billy (Jay Kontzle).

Dawn believes that Joe is to blame for Billy being attacked and left for dead. Joe didnt actually do it but seeming as hes stolen a kidney, caused the death of multiple people, framed someone for human trafficking, drugged his own brother and plotted the death of his step-grandmother (multiple times) its not hard to see why Dawn thinks he could be responsible.

In the past year his character seems to have softened with his engagement to Dawn and the pair are about to welcome their first child together, but Dawn shared a kiss with her ex Billy and since then things have spiralled.

Actor Ned Porteous believes Joe is somewhat misunderstood. Speaking exclusively to Daily Star he said: I dont think anyone wants to be a bad person he just hasnt had enough practice with being a good person and hes only ever seen evidence of being mean working.

Joe hasnt had an easy time; he was orphaned as a child after his mum died and his dad took his own life, and then theres his relationship with the one person he cared about and saw as a father figure, Graham Foster, who was killed off but then returned from the dead in this year's soap crossover epic, Corriedale.

Ned sees a sympathetic side to Joe: Hes only ever been let down by the people in his life that he cares the most for. Hes only ever seen money be able to buy everything, and the one final thing that you cant acquire through money is love, companionship, and thats his greatest insecurity the one thing that he needs more than anything, he has no real control over.

After everything comes crashing down for Joe, hes sure to want to seek revenge, but Ned is staying pretty tight-lipped on what comes next for Joe: Drama, surprise, love, pain a little bit of everything. A full spectrum of human emotion.
