Good Morning Britain fans were left in tears during the latest instalment of the ITV show.

GMB: Susanna Reid thanks WW2 veteran for his service

ITV fans were left reaching for the tissues during a touching segment on Good Morning Britain, as Susanna Reid fought back tears while chatting with a war veteran.

Susanna anchored the ITV morning show from Westminster Abbey to mark the 80th VE Day celebrations, while her co-hosts Ed Balls and Charlotte Hawkins held down the fort in the studio.

In an emotional moment, Susanna was joined by war hero Thomas, who shared his poignant memories of the war and the historic VE Day that signalled the end of World War II in Europe.

As their conversation came to a close, Susanna was visibly moved, barely holding back her tears as she expressed her gratitude for his service.

With a handshake full of respect, Susanna also jogged his memory about their previous encounter, saying: "Thank you so much for your service, it's so lovely to see you again because we first met six years ago didn't we, after you had been flirting with Melania Trump!"

Despite some viewers previously criticising Susanna's presenting approach, the heartfelt interview prompted a wave of support on social media platform X.

One viewer tweeted: "Oh @susannareid100 watching you talking to Thomas has made me cry. You were so lovely with him."

Another voiced their support, writing: "Unpopular opinion on this hashtag but I find @susannareid100 to be so empathetic and kind. I don't think she's patronising I think she genuinely cares! She always reaches out to anyone who is struggling in interviews."

And another simply hailed: "Wonderful Thomas.. what a hero."

Susanna interviewed a brave veteran

On May 8, 1945, known as Victory in Europe Day or V-E Day, the world rejoiced as World War II in Europe came to a close.

The war had raged on for nearly half a decade when Allied forces, including those from the U.S., launched a colossal invasion on Normandy's beaches in France on June 6, 1944.

Today (May 8th), Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, alongside Prince William and Princess Kate, will be present at the V-E Day service, reports Devon Live.

A nationwide two-minute silence is also scheduled for midday, while veterans at Westminster Abbey will receive white roses in honour of their service.

Over the weekend, the significant occasion was commemorated with various special events, including a military parade through the heart of London and a ceremonial flypast over Buckingham Palace and the Mall.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
