The Last of Us creator says 'it has to end' as he shares show update ahead of season 2

The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin has shut down any hopes of the HBO series continuing beyond the video game source material

The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin said "it has to end" as he shared a show update ahead of season two.

Adapted from the acclaimed video game series, the hit series is set two decades after a pandemic triggered by a widespread fungal outbreak turns people into zombies.

The debut season charted the harrowing travels of Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), who's roped into smuggling Ellie (Bella Ramsey), an immune teen, through the crumbling remains of society.

Set to premiere on Sky Atlantic on April 14, season two jumps five years ahead, capturing Joel and Ellie as they continue to navigate the treacherous, zombie-infested wasteland.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin, who co-created the drama with Neil Druckmann, confessed that there aren't any plans to stretch the storyline beyond what the original games have laid out, reports the Mirror US.

"I am not going to go past the game. I'll just say that flat out. So, if people are thinking, 'Oh, these guys are planning the old cash grab thing...'" he said.

"I'm basically setting a decade of my rapidly dwindling life on fire to tell this story. The show is so hard to make. It has to have an end. So, I'm not going to go past."

As for the show's legacy and the idea of spinning it further, Mazin hinted: "Who knows me, there might be a Dunk and Egg The Last of Us show that happens that somebody does.

"But for me, the only question is: Is it going to be one more season or will it require two more? If this can happen all in one more season, great. If we feel like it makes sense to break it into two, then we will do that."

The Last of Us franchise spans two epic video games, with the first season covering the inaugural game.

A third season is already in development, meaning the second game will span at least two seasons.

With the arrival of the show's hotly anticipated second chapter, viewers can look forward to meeting some legendary figures from the games, including Apple Cider Vinegar star Kaitlyn Dever, who plays antagonist Abby - a formidable soldier with scores to settle.

The much-anticipated introduction of Abby heralds the appearance of Ellie's love interest Dina, portrayed by Madame Web star Isabela Merced.

The ensemble cast also includes Young Mazino, Catherine OHara, Spencer Lord, Tati Gabrielle, Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, and Jeffrey Wright - who is set to reprise his role as militia leader Isaac Dixon from the beloved game series.
