Daniel McKee, one of the first gay stars of Married At First Sight UK, has revealed his injuries after being mugged in Mexico.
The reality star, who was paired with Matt Jameson on the popular E4 show in 2021, was brutally assaulted, resulting in a collapsed lung. Following the terrifying ordeal, he had to return home to Northern Ireland for Christmas.
The 30-year-old took to social media to share pictures of the aftermath of the attempted robbery. In a photo where he's seen holding a cup with his shirt off, he recounted the incident that occurred during his getaway.
"I got mugged in Mexico," he shared on Instagram. "They didn't manage to take anything because I fought back... which in hindsight you should NEVER EVER do as I got hurt... they did however redirect my winter travels for a few weeks which I'm not mad about."
In a subsequent post, he elaborated on the extent of his injuries, writing: "I have a wee tear in my lung, a small pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and some very sore ribs." Daniel also mentioned how it hurts "so bad" when he laughs but ended on a positive note, stating: "But I am grand. Merry Christmas."
Dan and Matt parted ways after two years together in December 2022, making history as the show's first-ever gay couple. Speaking to the Mirror, Matt disclosed that he and Dan have been unable to salvage a friendship from their relationship.
"The intention was that we would be friends" he shared. "But, with any relationship, you need to have that separation and especially for me to be able to move forward."
He continued: "It's been so hard because I was heartbroken by the break-up, because I loved him and I thought he was going to be my forever and then he wasn't and so I needed that break, I needed that no contact and we haven't spoken for a long time. I would hope in the future, we would and we'd be able to have some contact and have conversations and maybe build on a friendship, but it's just not been something that I've been able to do."
He revealed: "The relationship was so intense, we met at the altar and then spent a eight to 12 weeks together in the process filming and it was 24/7 and then after that we spent time here in Leeds and time over in Northern Ireland.
"There was maybe a couple of days, a week here and there in those two years that we weren't together. It was such an intense experience, it was a fast track relationship.
"We were together for two years, but if that had been a normal relationship, it would probably have spanned over four or five years."
