If you're a devotee of Game of Thrones, then this Netflix series could well become your new fixation.
Finding something fresh to watch when it feels like you've exhausted all available options can be challenging, particularly if you're hoping your next binge matches the high production standards and complex storytelling of a critically lauded series like Game of Thrones. However, according to some telly enthusiasts online, there's one show that actually surpasses the HBO fantasy drama.
Game of Thrones is frequently lauded as one of the finest television shows released in recent years, but views are divided over the conclusion of the show, which aired from 2011 until 2019. For some, the finale completely tarnished their enjoyment of the series, which is why another programme is now being touted as "better" than the George R. R. Martin adaptation.
The alternative show is named Dark, and it's a German science fiction mystery thriller series that became Netflix's inaugural German-language original series when it premiered on the streaming platform in 2017, reports the Express.
Dark isn't a high fantasy series in the same vein as Game of Thrones, so the shows aren't massively comparable, but after someone on Reddit asked for a recommendation of which one to watch first, most people concurred that Dark was "better".
In the Reddit post, the individual stated they wanted to watch both Dark and Game of Thrones, but sought people's opinions on which one they should start with.
They stated: "I want to start a new series, which should I watch? Dark or Game of Thrones? First, let me make it clear I am not comparing them, and yes, I'll be watching both of them. However, I was confused about which one I should watch first."
Opinions were divided on the matter, but numerous individuals asserted that Dark offered a "better" viewing experience than Game of Thrones, particularly as the original poster had also requested to be "hooked on it" from the inaugural episode.
One person said: "Dark will give you better satisfaction when you finish the whole series."
Another added: "Dark first for sure! It's the best show I've seen in the last decade, and I watch a lot of TV. Please seek out the original German version with subtitles, not the English dub."
A third wrote: "Dark is the best TV show of the last 20 years."
However, there were plenty who disagreed. Some claimed Game of Thrones boasts the "best storyline" of any show they've ever watched, while others argued the HBO series offers a "better experience" due to its larger cast and more intriguing sub-plots within the main plot.
Dark aired for three seasons between 2017 and 2020, and can be streamed on Netflix. It primarily follows the narrative of four families in the fictional town of Winden, as they seek the truth following a child's disappearance.
The series sees the families uncover a malevolent time travel conspiracy that spans several generations, and delves into the implications of time and its impact on humans and nature.
Dark has garnered critical praise for its performances, direction, writing, tone, visuals, and musical score, alongside the intricacy of its storyline. In 2021, the BBC ranked it as the 58th greatest TV series of the 21st century.
However, as Reddit users highlighted, Dark isn't a series you can casually view while browsing your mobile simultaneously, given the plot's complexity demands your complete focus - particularly if you're viewing it in German with subtitles.
One person wrote: "Dark is great, but you need full attention with the subtitles if you don't speak the language."
A second also shared: "I would recommend watching Dark. Whenever you do, though, know that this is not a series that you can half-watch while scrolling on your phone, so be prepared to concentrate, and even then, it may take a rewatch as there are a lot of moving parts within it."
Dark is available now on Netflix.
