A legendary EastEnders actress is behind what is described as a 'pivotal' role in the new Netflix series from Ricky Gervais.

The comedian is not shy to using some of the most recognisable faces and stars from the BBC soap. Shaun Williamson previously portrayed a version himself in Extras, the BBC sitcom co-created by Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

An immediate fan favourite, his character was referred to as 'Barry from EastEnders '. Now, Natalie Cassidy, famed for playing Sonia Fowler, is taking on a key role in Gervais' latest outing for the streaming giant.

For those unaware, Alley Cats is a six-part adult animation that sees "a gang of foul-mouthed feral cats who cause havoc while musing on the meaning of life and fighting for survival in a brutal human world."

But what role does Natalie Cassidy take on in the comedy series? Here's all you need to know.

Who does Natalie Cassidy play in Ricky Gervais' Alley Cats?

Natalie Cassidy appears multiple times across the series of Alley Cats. She voices the mother of Gervais' character Gus.

This includes in flashbacks as well as modern day scenes when Gus goes to visit her when she is more elderly. Cassidy herself has described her character as 'pivotal' to the overall narrative of the series.

Even though she did not feel like she could oversell the importance of it before the release, now she has seen it for herself, she understands it a bit more.

Speaking about her new show and her career to The Independent, she confessed: Id been playing the role down a bit, because its only small But having watched the whole series, I feel really proud of it."

Cassidy's part in Alley Cats isn't the first comedic role that the EastEnders star has actually taken on. Previously, she's made cameo appearances BBC shows Motherland and Mandy. Coincidentally, the writer and star of Mandy, Diane Morgan, plays Olive in Alley Cats.

Earning the role could be a turning point for Cassidy and she hopes it might lead to similar parts. She is the only member of the cast who has not appeared in a series alongside Gervais before, and its clearly a moment she is pleased about.

Ive been a huge Ricky fan going back to The Office , and Ive always said Id love to work with him. People have just looked at me like, Youre b***** mad! But I had a gut feeling that it might happen.

She says that the morning Gervais actually called her, she had just dropped off her daughters at school. Apparently the moment was so unbelievable, her knees buckled in the kitchen.

The rest of the Alley Cats cast is made up of stars who have previously appeared in Netflix's After Life, also created by Gervais. This includes Tom Basden as Ponce, Andrew Brooke as Fang, Tony Way as the drug dealer cat and Kerry Godliman as Lara.

Also featuring are David Earl as Puke and Jo Hartley as Kitten.
