The Normandy landings, most commonly referred to as D-Day, were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, June 6, 1944 during World War II. The invasion was conducted in two main phases - an airborne assault and amphibious landings, involving more than 18,000 paratroopers, 14,000 sorties, almost 7,000 naval vessels and some 132,000 ground troops.
