Renewable energy

Entity Logo [Entity Logo]

Renewable energy refers to an energy source that can be replenished at a higher rate than it is consumed. Two obvious examples include sunlight and wind.

Renewable energy sources are needed to take over the role of powering the global economy from fossil fuels, which are non-renewable, and contribute heavily to man-made global climate change, while also bringing a raft of other issues like localised pollution.

The UK's four main renewable energy sources are wind, solar, hydroelectric and bioenergy.

Nuclear energy is not considered to be a renewable energy because the elements used need to be mined from the ground. However, nuclear energy is not a fossil fuel.

The UK Conservative government has been criticised for effectively banning new onshore wind farms, after introducing a rule in 2015 stating that just a single objection can stop an entire project being built.
