Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a health condition where someone's pancreas doesn't make enough - or any - insulin.

Insulin is needed to help blood sugar enter your body's cells to use as energy - when insulin isn't present, blood sugar can't get into the cells and instead builds up in the bloodstream.

Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by your body attacking its own insulin-creating cells by mistake - known as an autoimmune reaction.

It can take up to months or even years before any symptoms appear.
