Queen Camilla has opened up about the deeply personal reality of King Charless cancer diagnosis, revealing the determined attitude her husband adopted as he faced treatment. The Queen, 79, reflected on the Kings health in a new film released today to mark the 30th anniversary of Maggies, the cancer support charity of which she has been president since 2008.

Speaking to the organisations chief executive Dame Laura Lee, Camilla recalled the difficult days immediately after Charles was diagnosed, when the news remained a closely guarded secret from the public. She also revealed how the King, 77, responded to the enormous upheaval, summing up his approach with the blunt three-word declaration: Nothing stopped him.

Despite continuing to receive treatment, Charles returned to public-facing duties less than three months after Buckingham Palace announced his diagnosis and has since undertaken a packed programme of engagements.

Reflecting on his determination, Camilla was heard saying, Look at my husband, nothing stopped him. He just said this is my way I am going to cope with it.

The Queens candid comments come as she revisited one particularly difficult engagement at Maggies Royal Free in north London on January 31, 2024, just five days before Buckingham Palace publicly announced the King had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer.

At the time, Camilla was surrounded by people experiencing cancer themselves and their loved ones, all while privately processing the fact that the disease had suddenly arrived within her own family.

I remember coming to see a Maggies just after The King had been diagnosed, she recalled. Nobody could say anything at the time. That was quite difficult.

The Queen admitted she came close to revealing what her family was facing, adding: I almost said something but, you know, I felt that it wasnt the time to say. [I] looked at everybody who was suffering and all the relations and I think it made me realise even more how important these places were.

Dame Laura acknowledged how challenging the engagement must have been, telling her: It was just a week before it became public, and the courage that that must have taken for you to make that visit. Camilla replied simply: I was just longing to let it out but obviously I couldnt.

The Queen said the experience also fundamentally changed the way she understood what families confronting a cancer diagnosis endure, having spent years meeting patients through her work with Maggies.

It had never really come back to roost at home, and suddenly your husband is diagnosed and you think goodness; Ive been talking to all these people, now Im the one with some relation whos got to help to look after my poor husband and try to understand it all, she said.

Camilla admitted she found herself approaching conversations differently during the visit, explaining: I was almost questioning them. I didnt want to pry too deeply. Normally, when I went in, I was just talking to them, but I felt it much more deeply.

Charles paused public-facing engagements following his diagnosis before returning to duties in April 2024, and has subsequently maintained a demanding schedule at home and overseas while undergoing treatment.

In December, the King delivered an encouraging update on his health, announcing that the frequency of his treatment could be significantly reduced, although the Palace has not described him as being in remission or cured.

Buckingham Palace said at the time that Charles had responded exceptionally well to treatment and his recovery had reached a very positive stage, with that guidance remaining unchanged.

The Kings decision to speak publicly about his diagnosis has also had a tangible impact beyond Palace walls, according to Maggies, with Dame Laura revealing the charity recorded a 12 per cent increase in men accessing its services.

The more open that you are about when you are talking about it, the less scary cancer can become, she told Camilla. If you just keep the lid on it, it can build up.

The seven-minute film, produced by Buckingham Palace in collaboration with Maggies, also features people who have used its services and footage from the Queens visit to its Cheltenham centre earlier this year.

There are now 27 Maggies centres across the UK, 18 of which have been visited by Camilla, with the organisation hoping to expand to 60 sites and raise 30million during its anniversary year.
