Duchess Sophie makes surprise radio appearance as she recalls personal family moment
The Duchess of Edinburgh has recalled a memory of watching it with the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
Duchess Sophie is set to make a surprise radio appearance tomorrow to celebrate 10 years since Team GB womens hockey team won gold at the Rio Olympics. On Tuesday, a teaser clip of the pre-recorded radio conversation on BBC Radio 5 Live was shared, showing the duchess recalling her memory of watching the final.
Prince Edwards wife has recalled how she watched this on the TV in Balmoral with the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. It is believed she was very close with her mother-in-law and father-in-law. It is also believed that she would have been enjoying a summer holiday at Balmoral Castle at the time - something the royals do every summer.
Talking about watching the match, Sophie - who had been watching all the team's matches - said she had to go to dinner in the middle of it due to the time zone difference. She said she kept wondering what was going on, and even had someone who was helping with dinner service "whispering" the score to her.
The duchess said she was eager to go at the end of dinner to watch the rest of the match and was eventually dismissed by Queen Elizabeth II from the table. She recalled: "Eventually Her Majesty sat there and said 'oh for goodness sake, just go!'.
"So I ran through to the library and I was watching it, and my father-in-law - the late Duke of Edinburgh - came through and he loved good sport, and he sat down and he was watching it with me.
"In fact, actually, I think he was watching my reaction more than he was watching the television because I was literally living and breathing every moment."
Sophie then said she was "leaping up and screaming" throughout the game and became aware that Queen Elizabeth II was standing in the doorway watching her.
Sophie said: "She (the late Queen) was watching the penalties. She couldn't cope with pressure, she had to take herself away again. She couldn't cope with it."
Smiling, Sophie said Prince Philip was laughing at her reaction to the game, with Sophie "sobbing" when the team won.
The full pre-recorded conversation will be able to available tomorrow on BBC Radio 5 Live at 9pm in a special programme celebrating 10 years since the win.
