This month, there's a little-known rule in place across approximately 600 UK beaches, with a risk of a 1,000 fine if caught breaking it.

There's nothing better than a day spent at the beach, with a plethora of sprawling sand coastlines and lapping waves that engulf the UK to choose from. Yet before heading to that sought-after summer escape, it's crucial to be aware of any rules that might be in place.

Some of the most common beach rules across the nation can see restrictions on where visitors are allowed to swim, the removal of natural items, and strict regulations on litter and barbecues. While these are often in place year-round, some beach rules can be seasonal, making them easier to forget.

One major rule in place during the summer months is the ban on taking dogs to the beach. The aim is to keep beaches clean and safe during peak season, especially when families and children flock to the beach for a fun-packed day out.

The bans are typically in place from 1 May to 30 September every year and are implemented under a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), while specific regulations can vary by beach. Some will have a complete ban in force, while others may have a partial ban, such as keeping dogs on leads or allowing them to walk only on the promenade rather than the beach itself.

The UK is home to around 1,500 beaches, and according to the Beach Guide, 883 of those are dog-friendly. There are 447 in England, 243 in Wales, 20 in Northern Ireland and 173 in Scotland.

Therefore, approximately 600 beaches have some form of restrictions in place for our furry friends. However, the ban does not apply to guide dogs or other assistance dogs.

While the golden sand and splashing waves are a haven for furry pooches to play, if owners are caught taking their dog to a beach where a restriction is in place, it can result in an on-the-spot fine (Fixed Penalty Notice) of around 100. This can increase to a staggering 1,000 if the case is taken to court.

However, despite the rule impacting around 600 UK beaches, there are still plenty of dog-friendly shores available throughout the year. Some of the favourites include Watergate Bay in Newquay, Cornwall, Holkham Beach in Norfolk and Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire, where dogs are welcome all year round.

Additionally, some beaches that ban dogs during the summer months may have exceptions allowing our four-legged friends to visit early in the morning or in the evening, when crowds have typically dispersed. So before taking a trip to any UK beach, it's best to check directly if there are any restrictions in place to avoid being caught out and risking a hefty fine.
