Charitable purposes

Your charity must have charitable purposes that help the public (known as being for public benefit).

Charitable purposes include things that contribute to:

  • relieving poverty
  • education
  • religion
  • health
  • saving lives
  • citizenship or community development
  • the arts
  • amateur sport
  • human rights
  • religious or racial harmony
  • the protection of the environment
  • animal welfare
  • the efficiency of the armed forces, police, fire or ambulance services

You should also read about public benefit to decide if your charitys aims are suitable.

You cannot set up a charity to help one specific person.

    The governing document is a set of rules that explains how your charity is run. It needs to include your charity's structure, name and purposes.

  8. Step 5 Make sure you meet the 'public benefit requirement'

    Your organisation must be able to show that it benefits the public.

  9. Step 6 Register your charity

    You must apply to register your charity with the Charity Commission if either:

    • its income will be at least 5,000 per year
    • its a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO)

    You can register your charitys details with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to get tax back on things like Gift Aid donations.
