Two schoolboys have helped transform their North Lincolnshire village into an oasis of colour and win it a top award.
Sir John Nelthorpe pupils Jake Broughton and Tom Lindley, both 15, built ten sleeper beds for plants and flowers to decorate their home village of Barnetby le Wold. Their efforts were rewarded in the Best Kept Village competition organised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).
A special design of a character was also created on a bench next to a planter, overlooking the village church.
Jake's grandmother, Wendy Broughton, is a volunteer member of the village In Bloom group which has helped keep Barnetby looking immaculate for many years. Jake and Tom build the beds so the volunteers can tend to the flowers and add a lot of colour to the village.
The talented teenagers also built a character for a bench made of steel for the South Street feature. Known as "Wilfred" he sits on the bench which is a centenary celebration for not just the CPRE, but also the village's St Barnabas Church.
They were helped by Jake's dad of T. Broughton and Sons. Wendy said: "They made the matchstick character as if he was reading a newspaper."
She added: "They are fantastic boys. We asked if they could help with the feature and they did it. We could not have done it without them." Jake said: "We said they needed someone sitting on the bench and said we can do it. So we created Wilfred. Then we said he needed to be reading a newspaper. So we made that too."
Barnetby was one of the winners in the Medium Village class along with taking the special award for the CPRE's Centenary year.
