Six weeks ago, this year's incoming LL.M. class might not have found their way from the Clocktower to Capitol Hill without a map. By Friday, they won't need one. Georgetown Law's LL.M. Summer Experience gives incoming international LL.M. students a running start before the fall term: Foundations of American Law in Session I, then a choice of Professional Responsibility Law or U.S. Legal Research & Writing in Session II, plus weeks spent learning Capitol Campus and the city around it. Incoming or Current Georgetown Tax LLM Students: Im looking for a few of you Our Private Client Services and Tax Controversy and Litigation team in McLean, VA is opening externship opportunities for the coming academic year, and Id like to hear from students who are serious about this work. What we do sits at an unusual intersection. We handle some of the most sophisticated estate and gift tax and charitable giving matters in the country; the ones where the Code runs out, the regulations shrug, and judgment takes over. The answer is rarely on the first page. Its usually in the fourth footnote, in a forty-year-old ruling, or in the fact pattern nobody thought to ask about. Clients bring us their hardest questions because they trust us to get them right, and that trust is earned one difficult answer at a time. Thats the distinction I care about most. There is a difference between having a tax practice and building a career as a trusted advisor to people who need one. The second takes longer. It is learned the way it has always been learned, which is sitting next to lawyers who have been doing it for decades, doing the careful work, and getting better at it every year. The people I most admire in this field were in no hurry, and it shows in their judgment. If thats the kind of career youre after, we should talk. Im especially interested in students pursuing the Estate Planning Certificate, and in anyone who has ever read a private letter ruling for pleasure. Summer Experience is in full swing! Today, the Summer Experience students mingled over lunch and celebrated the end of the first week of classes. It has been great to have part of the LL.M. class of 2026-2027 on campus, and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the rest of the class in September. Organized by the Office of Graduate Programs, the Summer Experience invites incoming foreign-trained LL.M. students to dive into courses and start making D.C. their new home prior to orientation! We are excited to share that Professor Stephen Horowitz brought his teaching and mentorship to Japan this summer! He taught a one-week course at Kobe University Law School titled "Legal English for Regulation," focusing on AI & copyright and AI & product liability. He also led study sessions for the Osaka Bar Association's International Section on "How US Lawyers Are Using AI" and "Legal Email Writing." While in Japan, he reconnected with Georgetown LLM alumni Mai Ochiai (LL.M. 25) and Tomohiko Kamiya, FCIArb, CFE, CIA (LL.M. 07), highlighting how Georgetown Law connections truly span time and distance.
