Nintendo fans hoping to get their football fix on the Switch 2 have waited with bated breath for news on EA Sports FC 27. While the title's reveal answered some gameplay questions and EA Sports have unveiled details about certain game modes, there remains uncertainty about EA FC 27's performance on Nintendo Switch 2.
The next title in the football franchise formerly known as EA Sports FIFA will launch on Friday, September 25. A new gameplay trailer and sneak peeks at overhauled modes have already given fans a taste of what's to come.
There's plenty of good news for Switch 2 owners, who will be relieved to know that their copy of EA FC 27 won't be any different to the game on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Previous editions of EA Sports FC and FIFA games on the original Switch would sometimes be missing features compared to those on other platforms.
Thankfully, it appears those days are behind us thanks to the Switch 2's improved capabilities. For instance, the new open-world social hub mode, The Grounds, has been confirmed to be included in the Switch 2 version of EA FC 27.
The Grounds is a prime example of the kind of feature that wouldn't have been included in the past. But there's a burning question about EA FC 27's frame rate on Switch 2 that EA Sports have yet to officially answer.
Plenty of gamers are hoping that EA FC 27 will take full advantage of the Switch 2's 60fps ability, especially in handheld mode. However, there's bad news for those fans.
According to Polish journalist Maciej Zablocki, who writes for tech outlet PPE, EA FC 27 will only run at 30fps on Switch 2. Zablocki explained that he took part in a playtest for Switch 2 and PS5 at EA Sports' headquarters in Vancouver, Canada.
He wrote: "The most important thing is that Nintendo console owners will get exactly the same content as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players." However, Zablocki went on: "Unfortunately, the game still runs at 30 frames per second.
"After switching from PS5, the difference is clear. At the time of writing, I haven't yet been able to get a definitive answer as to whether the Switch 2 will receive full crossplay with other platforms.
"This is especially important in the context of The Grounds. If Nintendo Switch users are playing at 30 FPS while PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC owners are playing at 60 FPS, competing together could prove problematic.
"The question also remains whether EA will decide to separate players based on platform or frame rate. EA Sports FC 27 is also coming to PS4 and Xbox One, but it won't include those versions of The Grounds."
The good news, Zablocki said, is that "there will be no neutered modes or a simplified set of features" on Switch 2, compared to the other platforms. He added: "This also applies to The Grounds.
"The Switch 2 version looks better than last year's installment. The graphics, image sharpness, and some detail have been improved, which I'm very happy about, as EA FC 26 left a lot to be desired in this area.
"I played a few full matches and overall the game was very good. The controls were responsive, the visuals were clear, and the gameplay itself didn't feel like a diminished version of the "full" version."
As we patiently await official confirmation from EA Sports, this is the clearest indicator yet that EA FC 27 won't run at 60fps on Switch 2.
