Rescuers are searching an area off the Welsh coast for a man who vanished after heading on a rock climbing trip.

A boat and helicopter from the coastguard have been scrambled to search for the missing man, named only as Ben, who is said to be missing from the St. Davids area.

The emergency crews are searching for Ben in an area on the coast of Pembrokeshire after the 47-year-old was last spoken to by his family at around midday on Wednesday, according to police.

It is believed he intended to go rock climbing, either in the Carreg y Barcud area, near Trelerw, or Caer Bwdy Bay, outside St Davids, Wales Online reports.

Dyfed-Powys Police said Ben is described as around 5ft 11in tall, of athletic build, with short brown/greying hair and brown eyes.

He was carrying an orange bag and wearing black climbing shoes with an orange strap at the time he went missing.

The force said anyone who has seen or spoken to Ben since midday on Wednesday is urgently asked to get in touch.

A spokesperson for the coastguard told the Mirror: "HM Coastguard is conducting a search along the St David's coastline for a missing man, reported at about 9.50pm on 5 August.

"Two HM Coastguard helicopters and two HM Coastguard aeroplanes have been sent, as well as Coastguard Rescue Teams from St David's, Fishguard, Broad Haven, and Dale.

"RNLI lifeboats have also been sent from Tenby, St David's, Angle, and Little and Broad Haven. RNLI lifeguards from Newgale are also assisting. Dyfed-Powys Police was alerted."

In an update today Dyfed-Powys Police told the Mirror: "The police led search for Ben, reported missing from St Davids, continues today with the support of specialist officers, drones, helicopter, marine unit, and specialist skills of HM Coastguard and the RNLI.

"Ben was last spoken to by family at around midday yesterday (Wednesday, August 5) when he intended to go rock climbing, either in the Carreg y Barcud area, near Trelerw, or Caer Bwdy Bay, outside St Davids.

"He was carrying an orange bag, and wearing black climbing shoes with an orange strap.

"We'd like to thank everyone that has helped so far and ask that members of the public stay away from the area for their own safety.

"Anyone who has seen or spoken to Ben since midday on August 5 is asked to get in touch."
