Record heatwaves expose hidden history - from Nazi motorbike to mammoth bones and 'lost' gardens

The heatwave gripping Britain and the rest of Europe has turned up a number of incredible historical finds - including a Nazi motorbike, mammoth tusks and long-lost gardens

A Nazi motorbike is one of the many secrets of history uncovered by Europe's record-breaking heatwave.

The Wehrmacht military motorcycle, the remains of two soldiers, and World War II ammunition were among items found on the riverbed amid record-low water levels along the Danube in Budapest at the weekend.

Mammoth bones believed to be several thousand years old were also discovered along the same river near Ryahovo, Bulgaria.

Across Europe, months of scorching hot temperatures and low rainfall have seen rivers, reservoirs and lakes turn up secrets that until now have been hidden from history, offering archaeologists a unique opportunity to retrieve important artefacts.

Parched, dry grass has meanwhile revealed the outlines of structures long since demolished and forgotten - including a grand 17th century formal garden that once stood on the grounds of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
