A young child suffered life-threatening injuries in a horror crash which hurt another two people, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to a major junction in Glenagle, a town 41 miles (66km) south of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, on Monday (July 6). Police investigators believe two cars collided at 2:14pm local time at the junction of Mount Lindesay Highway and Gould Hill Road.
Four people were involved in the incident. A child sustained life-threatening injuries and was subsequently airlifted to hospital, while a 56-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl were also transported to hospital, Queensland Police said.
Both of their conditions were described as non-life-threatening injuries by cops who released an update on Tuesday (July 7). The fourth person involved in the crash, a 52-year-old man, did not sustain any physical injuries.
The seriously-injured child was of primary school age according to the Daily Mail,, which also reported the woman in her fifties was taken to PA Hospital in Brisbane, while the 13-year-old was transported to Logan Hospital, between Brisbane and Gold Coast. Reportedly, the teen is in a stable condition.
Investigators are now probing how the devastating incident occurred. They currently believe a Subaru Impreza travelling southbound collided with Nissan Qashqai, which was driven by the 56-year-old woman from Gleneagle and contained the child airlifted to hospital. The Subaru driver, the 52-year-old man, was from nearby Beaudesert.
A spokesperson for Queensland Police said: "The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating following a serious traffic crash at Gleneagle yesterday afternoon, July 6.
"Initial investigations indicate at 2.14pm, a Subaru Impreza sedan travelling southbound collided with Nissan Qashqai station wagon at the intersection of Mount Lindesay Highway and Gould Hill Road.
"A child, who was a passenger in the Nissan, sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital. The driver of the Nissan, a 56-year-old Gleneagle woman, and a second passenger, a 13-year-old girl sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also transported to hospital."
Mount Lindesay Highway is a key route in Australias national highway network. The 72 mile (116km) route connects Brisbane, the Queensland state capital, to New South Wales, the countrys most populous state.
The road was closed following the collision in both directions at the intersection with Gould Hill Road and Outlook Boulevard,' Queensland Police also said.
CCTV images from the scene, taken in the aftermath of the collision, show a significant emergency service presence in the area, with debris scattered across the road. A damaged car can be seen in the image, which also shows a small group of onlookers and stationary traffic.
Cops are now asking the public with information to come forward to help progress their investigation. Queensland Polices statement added: Officers are appealing to anyone with relevant information or CCTV or dashcam to contact police. Quote this reference number: QP2601311656
