Grantchester's Robson Green breaks down in tears after being 'in a lot of trouble'

Grantchester star Robson Green has revealed how the ITV detective drama transformed his life

Rishi Nair chats about filming tenth series of Grantchester

Grantchester star Robson Green broke down in tears after being "in a lot of trouble". The popular detective drama made its return to ITV earlier this month for its tenth series.

First aired in 2014, the British crime drama followed Anglican vicar Sidney Chambers (James Norton), who delved into a series of mysterious wrongdoings in his quaint Cambridgeshire village. Alongside Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, portrayed by Robson, Sidney embarked on his investigative journeys.

Over the years, Geordie has teamed up with several vicars, including Reverend Will Davenport (Tom Brittney), and most recently, Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair).

Fans have been thrilled by the return of Alphy and Geordie for the tenth season, ahead of the eleventh and final season that's likely to air next year. As Grantchester nears its conclusion, leading man Robson expressed how much the show has meant to him, and how taking on the role of Geordie has made him a "better person", reports Cambridgeshire Live.

Speaking to press last month, the actor revealed: "It's the one that always, when I look [producer] Emma Kingsman-Lloyd in the eye, we just go... Truth be told, I was in a lot of trouble when I was filming in Thailand [before Grantchester]... There was an accident on set and were weren't going to be paid.

"So, I was kind of struggling on many levels, and I got a phone call from my agent, saying, 'Emma Kingsman-Lloyd wants to speak to you. She's got this project called Grantchester, written by Daisy Coulam.' I went, 'Great, I need something. I need something to hold onto here.'"

Robson went on: "I got the script, and with the first ten pages, because of my state of mind of what was going on in my life, I found comfort in reading this, and I saw it immediately - I saw myself in it. Even though in the books, I look nothing like James Runcie's creation. Thank goodness that Daisy saw Geordie as me.

"But then I did a Skype call with Emma... I just remember talking to [her] about the project, the character, the relationship and where the storylines could possibly go. All the relations were tested by crime, the worst crime of all, light and dark murder."

Looking back on his final scenes, which he filmed last year, Robson revealed: "In that final series, that final take, I just said a few words to everybody [about] how beautiful the experience has been. And then I just looked at Emma, and I just went back to that joyous day when she called me and basically gave me an opportunity that has been my road to Damascus. It's made me a better person.

"I just broke, it was beautiful... This beautiful family that, as a unit, you may never see again. You probably won't ever see all those faces in one space ever again, and that was a beautiful moment. That was the highlight for me."

He finished by saying: "With Grantchester, nothing really ends, not really. The River Cam will keep flowing, the swans will keep swimming. And if you're in Cambridge and you look hard enough, you might find two old men at the bar - an ex-copper and a vicar - having a warm pint and putting the world to rights."

Tonight's (Wednesday, January 21) instalment of Grantchester will see Alphy and Geordie delve into allegations of witchcraft at a foundling home, managed by an old acquaintance of the vicar's.
