The stars of a "gritty" crime drama hailed by some fans as "better than the original" have addressed the show's future.

Van der Valk returned earlier this month for a fourth series after a three-year break.

Starring Marc Warren and Maimie McCoy, it followed three more explosive homicide cases for Van der Valk's team to solve.

That stars have now revealed that the show is "set up" for a new series, hinting at its possible return.

Marc shared: Its set up for another series, if anybody gets to the end of series four, theyll want to know what series five is.

What we want and what we get are two different things in life, but certainly very grateful to have done it and would love to do more," reports the Express.

Maimie meanwhile shared: "The thing about four is, it's almost like it's really found its feet and identity, and I think we have.

"When we started season four, it had maybe been a year since we shot the other ones, it feels like it was naturally growing."

Talking about her close bond with her co-stars, she continued: I think as life is happening to all of us very separately, it just brings a richness to it, which I think is very hard to talk about or describe.

It infuses the show and I guess thats what should happen over time for any show, any book, it should just kind of keep if you come to it with an energy, it should keep blossoming.

Marc added: Weve been through a lot of life stuff on this show, and thats all Ill say on that, it's very bonding, we had Covid in it.

Its a very unusual show, it came from nowhere and suddenly we found ourselves I remember in series three, I woke up and was like, This is incredible, because when youre doing it, its such a lot of work and it took me three or four seasons to really appreciate what an incredible series this was.

Based on Nicolas Freelings crime thriller novels, the show first aired in 2020 on ITV, as a reboot of the 1970s series with Barry Foster.
