If you tuned into Good Morning Britain today expecting to catch Susanna Reid, you'll have clocked that she was nowhere to be seen on the ITV breakfast programme.

The broadcaster, 55, recently revealed that she's taking a break from her morning duties to focus on a thrilling, "special project" that she is keeping a secret from fans.

Due to this new project, viewers will need to adjust to her absence for a few more days as she's not set to make her comeback to her regular presenting role until next week Monday (July 6).

Susanna was last seen on the famous sofa on Monday, 22nd June, when she presented the programme alongside fellow host Ed Balls.

The morning proved to be quite eventful as cameras had been set up outside Downing Street, with Susanna hinting that major news could break while the programme was on air.

She subsequently announced that GMB would extend until 10am, filling in for Lorraine Kelly's typical time slot. Susanna said: "We are now in rolling news mode, we will be on air until 10am this morning because we've anticipated it all morning."

Later on the show, Sir Keir Starmer emerged from Downing Street to announce his intention to stand down as Prime Minister once a replacement has been selected, acknowledging he was not best positioned to lead Labour into the forthcoming general election, while also outlining a departure timeline.

Susanna later commemorated the momentous occasion on Instagram, posting: "BREAKING! At 9.30 this morning the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer RESIGNED as Prime Minister live @gmb. ANOTHER resignation at Number 10 in the last DECADE after Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss, and Sunak."

In the very same post, Susanna shed light on her upcoming absence from screens, adding: "I'm on a special project and will be back @gmb on Monday 6th July, the week that nominations for a new leader open. See you then @itv."

The nature of Susanna's mystery project remains undisclosed, with ITV remaining tight-lipped on the matter.

Kate Garraway stepped in to co-host alongside Ed Balls on Monday, 29th June, while Adil Ray has confirmed he will be holding the fort on GMB on Thursday, 2nd July, during Susanna's absence.

On 24th June, Adil shared on Instagram: "Some news! Yes I have not been on in a while but glad to be on a little over the coming weeks, on what remains one the most important shows on UK television, during the most important of times.

"Being one of the only (if not the only) Muslims to host a major news show in mainstream peak daytime. So many others have left the traditional outlets, so I am fortunate and grateful of the continued opportunity.

"And of course I aim to reflect us all, especially the Villa fans. Thank you for supporting me everyone, and I hope you will join us @gmb next Thursday. Dates: Thursday July 2 & 9, Thursday July 30 and Friday 31st, Thursday August 6th and Friday 7th."

Good Morning Britain airs weekday from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX
