An axe-wielding man turned up at a woman's home and threatened to "chop her up" if she didn't open the door.
He then used the axe to hit the door causing damage.
Simon Morris, 48, was caught on camera arriving at the house of a woman, whose boyfriend he knew, at around 6.40am on April 28.
The defendant was in possession of an axe and was kicking the front door repeatedly while shouting to be let into the property.
A sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Friday heard Morris could be heard saying: "I want to talk to you. If not I'll chop you all up. Open the door now." Dont miss a court report by signing up to our crime newsletter here.
The victim was not present at the time of the incident but later viewed the footage when she returned home.
She was said to be "petrified" and was too scared to stay in the house.
The defendant was arrested on April 30 and interviewed at Merthyr Tydfil police station.
He answered "no comment" to questions put to him.
It later transpired that the threats, and his reason for attending the property, were directed at the woman's boyfriend.
Morris, of Railway Close, Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfil, later pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage.
The court heard he has 22 previous convictions including violent offences, and possessing a bladed article.
In mitigation Josh Scouller said his client's actions were "impulsive, stupid, and unsophisticated".
The defence barrister said the defendant accepts he has a poor history of drug and alcohol abuse.
Judge Jeremy Jenkins sentenced Morris to six months imprisonment.
The defendant was also made subject to a restraining order for two years.
