S4C's biggest song writing competition Cn i Gymru, has officially opened its doors to applicants for 2027. The news was announced on Thursday, July 6, at an event held at the channel's stand at Eisteddfod y Garreg Las.
Presenters Trystan Ellis-Morris and Elin Fflur revealed that Cardiff Students' Union Great Hall will host the competition on Saturday, February 27, 2027. This makes a change from this year's competition which was held at the Anglesey Showground in Mona, where 'Y Gn' by Geth Tomos, Henry Priestman and Emlyn Gomer claimed the coveted title.
The competition promotes Welsh language music and offers composers from across Wales and further afield the chance to showcase their musical abilities in the hopes of earning the prestigious title of Cn i Gymru 2027. For the biggest stories in Wales first sign up to our daily newsletter here
The victorious song will not only earn its creator the title and bragging rights, but also a competition trophy and a 5,000 cash prize.
For the first time ever, the winner will also have the opportunity to film a special music video to be released on S4C Miwsig's YouTube channel.
In addition to the winner, the runner-up will also receive 3,000, while third place will be awarded 2,000.
Presenter Trystan Ellis-Morris said: "Hosting the live event at Cardiff SU Great Hall in 2027 is going to be very exciting.
"It's a stage that has welcomed some of the biggest names in music Oasis, Biffy Clyro, Becky Hill, The Cure, Ed Sheeran and it feels very fitting that Welsh artists and composers will have the opportunity to shine there too."
Returning to chair the judging panel is musician Osian Huw Williams, lead vocalist of Candelas and former co-winner of the award.
This year, however, the remaining panel members won't be disclosed until applications have closed.
In a further alteration for 2027, only one composition per composer will be permitted to advance to the final, with discussions between the composers and production company determining which performer or performers are most suitable to deliver each song.
The deadline for Cn i Gymru 2027 applications is Sunday, October 4, 2026 at 11.59pm. So, if you think you have what it takes then you should start writing now.
You can apply via S4C's website here, where you will find an application form and the complete terms and conditions for entering the competition.
