Hollywood A-lister Catherine Zeta-Jones and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer are among those leading the tributes to Welsh music icon Bonnie Tyler, who has died at the age of 75.

The Neath Port Talbot-born star, renowned for chart-topping hits including Holding Out for a Hero and Total Eclipse of the Heart, was placed into an induced coma at the beginning of May following emergency surgery. Her family said she "unexpectedly passed away" at a hospital in Portugal.

A message on the hugely popular Welsh power ballad singer's website read: "Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for."

Her family have asked for privacy as they come to terms with the "tragedy".

Thousands of fans and celebrities have already paid tribute to Tyler, with First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth saying "Wales has lost an icon". Fellow Welsh woman Catherine Zeta-Jones said her "heart is broken" after hearing the news.

She said: "Our Queen Bonnie.. you were such a part of my life. Sleep tight beautiful lady."

The musician's team had previously told fans Tyler was no longer in a coma, but remained seriously unwell in intensive care in Portugal. In an update published on June 15, her representatives said they were cancelling all upcoming shows but it was hoped shows scheduled for this autumn would go ahead.

Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951 in Skewen, Neath. Known for her distinctive husky voice, Tyler came to prominence with the release of her 1977 album The World Starts Tonight and its singles Lost in France and More Than a Lover.

From Swansea club to Total Eclipse Of The Heart: Tyler's early career

Gaynor Hopkins was born on June 8, 1951 in Skewen, Neath, in South Wales, the daughter of Glyndwr Hopkins, a coal miner, and his wife, Elsie (nee Lewis). She grew up in a council house with three sisters and two brothers whose musical tastes included Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the Beatles although her favourites were Janis Joplin and Tina Turner, both powerful female singers.

It was a deeply religious background, attending chapel three times a day on Sundays. It was there that she gave her first public performance as child with a rendition of the hymn All Things Bright And Beautiful.

Having left school at 16 with no qualifications, in 1969 she was entered into a local talent contest by an aunt, finishing second. Although the prize money was just 1, she was encouraged by her success to pursue a career in music, initially finding work as a backing singer with Bobby Wayne and the Dixies.

In 1975 she was spotted performing in the Townsman Club in Swansea by talent scout Roger Bell who invited her to London to record a demo tape.

Months later she was offered her first recording contract by RCA who advised her to change her name. She came up with Bonnie Tyler from a list of first names and surnames picked from a newspaper.

Her debut single My! My! Honeycomb was a flop but the follow-up Lost In France became her first hit, reaching number nine in the UK singles chart, leading to her debut appearance on Top Of The Pops.
