Mumbles RFC's ground, Underhill Park

Despite the well-documented struggles of Welsh rugby in recent times, the sport and its clubs remain at the centre of many communities throughout Wales.

There are nearly 300 amateur teams, who all make up the Welsh Rugby Union and provide a focal point for the people who live in towns and villages up and down the land.

Wales is blessed with an ingrained passion for the game, as well as some of the most remarkable landscapes anywhere in the world. Put those factors together and the breadth of stunning rugby grounds the nation has to offer is unrivalled in so many ways.

Each has their own story to tell and reason to be considered among the finest around. These are the best rugby grounds in Wales.

PARC MAWR - BONYMAEN RFC

The home of Bonymaen has been described as the top of the world, with the club itself calling it Gods little garden.

Its easy to see why when you take in the views on offer. A certain Alun Wyn Jones once graced the field as a youngster.

LAWRENCE PARK - PONTYCYMMER RFC

This is one where you kind of have to just let the picture do the talking really.

A stunning backdrop of the Garw Valley. Any club would be proud to have that.

ABERTILLERY PARK - ABERTILLERY BG RFC

Abertillery Park has hosted the likes of the All Blacks and Australia in years gone by when they played touring matches at the venue.

It's a beautiful old ground with a stunning backdrop and rich history.

THE REC - PENCLAWDD RFC

The home of Penclawdd RFC is one of those that benefits from the natural beauty on offer in Wales.

One side of the ground boasts breathtaking views of the Loughor estuary, making it arguably the most picturesque rugby venue in the country.

UNDERHILL PARK - MUMBLES RFC

There's no denying Mumbles is a beautiful part of the world - especially when the sun is shining.

As a result, Underhill Park, Mumbles RFC's home, offers some picturesque views of the local scenery.

BISHOP'S FIELD - LLANDAFF RFC

Llandaff RFC have played at their home of Bishop's Fields since their inception in 1876.

What's most striking about this particular pitch is the eye-catching Llandaff Cathedral in the background.

PONTYPOOL PARK - PONTYPOOL RFC

One of the great Welsh rugby grounds that can generate a memorable atmosphere.

The ground has witnessed many an epic match and was home to one of the greatest Welsh rugby teams in history during the 1980s. An iconic venue known the world over.

KING GEORGE V FIELD - CLWB RYGBI HARLECH

The first castle on our list.

The presence of Harlech Castle watching over Clwb Rygbi Harlech's pitch is quite unique.

Doesn't get much more Welsh than that.

THE REC - BEDLINOG RFC

A ground that looks stunning under the floodlights, with the silhouetted landscape behind the perfect backdrop.

Also, it has a shelter next to the scoreboard with a wood burner, which is a rather nice touch.

WELFARE GROUND - HAFODYRYNYS RFC

A nomination for the home of Hafodyrynys RFC.

The village is set between Crumlin and Pontypool and the Welfare Ground boasts stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

THE OVAL - TREORCHY RFC

They say a picture paints a thousand words.

Well, this picture tells you far more about what makes Treorchy Zebras' ground picturesque far better than I ever could.

NORTH ROAD - LAMPETER TOWN RFC

Lampeter Town RFC's ground on North Road has stunning views of the surrounding hillside.

FLINT RFC

Set on the banks of the River Dee, with the Wirral just across the water and the remnants of Flint Castle in the background, this is a truly picturesque venue.

Many a visiting player has described it as the nicest ground they have ever played at. Its easy to see why.

DYFFRYN PENNAR PARK - MOUNTAIN ASH RFC

With a small stand on one side of the pitch and mountains surrounding it, the home of Mountain Ash is a cracking setup.

The pitch is regularly in great shape too.

It has been branded probably the best grassroots ground in Wales by some.

VIRGINIA PARK - CAERPHILLY RFC

The venue has hosted top-class rugby in the past and was the setting for a regional derby between the Dragons and Cardiff in 2017.

A cracking facility widely used in the community.

THE ATHLETIC GROUND - GOWERTON RFC

Another setup that was been described to us as "one of the best in Wales". It's also the club that gave us Leigh Halfpenny and is the place the Wales legend could be found on many a Christmas Day morning as he perfected his kicking while the rest of us took a day off.

CENTRAL PARK - BLAINA RFC

A cracking little setup with the mountains overlooking the stand on the far side of the pitch. Last season saw the team win the league and Division One Cup double as they go from strength to strength on the field.

ABERAMAN PARK - ABERCWMBOI RFC

Abercwmboi's home ground boasts some tidy modern facilities, with a pitchside clubhouse providing the perfect viewpoint for a match.

But it's not just the facilities that make this ground.

When the sun goes down and the floodlights come on, the mountains that surround it are nothing more than a silhouette and it's quite striking.

GRAIG PARK - PENYGRAIG RFC

One of the top grounds in the Rhondda Valley, Graig Park has long been used as a neutral venue for local cup semi-finals and finals.

The pitch is always in great nick but not always the easiest place to go and get a result!

SARDIS ROAD - PONTYPRIDD RFC

The House of Pain.

This famous venue has played host to some great occasions, particularly when Ponty were battling it out with Europe's top clubs.

It has been updated in recent years and now boasts an artificial pitch and impressive modern facilities.

THE GNOLL - NEATH RFC

Nowadays, the ground looks in good nick, indeed.

The playing surface is billiard-table flat. The stand remains a fine viewing area. And when the locals start up their drum-beat chant of Neath! Neath! Neath! the atmosphere can be warlike and, for home players, inspirational.

The clubhouse has stood the test of time. A great club, a great ground to visit.

BREWERY FIELD - BRIDGEND RFC

Another of the notorious old Premiership grounds and the home of Bridgend RFC.

The Brewery Field was also where the Celtic Warriors played the majority of their home games and has been the home of the Ospreys in recent times - improving the atmosphere at the region's matches considerably.

Another classic ground.

SULLY SPORTS RFC

One that is probably not on this list due to the quality of the facilities but, again, the location is incredible.

Bigger clubs surround it but Sully Sports has a remarkable view.

BROADCARE - DUNVANT RFC

The advice might be to wear a coat when visiting Broadacre because its a wide-open ground that the wind can whip through. But its also stunningly welcoming.

The stand provides a great view and a seriously impressive atmosphere can be generated around the pitch by spectators who are close to the players call it the sound of the suburbs. The clubhouse is snug and the locals could not be more friendly.

Great people, great base and a pitch like a bowling green.

THE WELFARE GROUND - PORTH RFC

Never an easy place to go, especially during the winter months!

Set into the hillside, there is a row of terraced housing on one side and views of the surrounding mountains on the others.

A great ground.

PENRHYS PARK - TYLORSTOWN RFC

One of the most stunning rugby venues in Wales, situated on the side of Penrhys Mountain.

The ground boasts amazing views of the Rhondda Fach Valley. Another tough place to go in the winter!

PARC DREFACH - ABERAERON RFC

If Tylorstown's pitch is up there, then Aberaeron's home ground is definitely in the mix as well but for different reasons.

The view you get from here out over the sea is phenomenal. Got to be a front-runner for most picturesque ground in Wales.

THE OLD PARISH - MAESTEG RFC

Views of the entire Llynfi Valley are on offer from the table-top venue.

A compact stand faces a seated area opposite. The clubs iconic black-and-amber colours are evident all around. The playing surface remains as good as it ever was. There is a welcoming clubhouse, rebuilt and refurbished after fire damage in 2013.

Spectating at the Old Parish remains an experience to savour.

THE WELFARE GROUND - CAMBRIAN RFC

Another ground with a beautiful backdrop but spend too much time looking at it and you'll be in trouble.

'The Tump' has been a notoriously difficult place to go.

Stad Diwydiannol Llwyn y Gell - Clwb Rygbi Bro Ffestiniog

With the slate mountains overlooking this ground, Clwb Rygbi Bro Ffestiniog's home has an earthly feel to it.

The weather in Blaenau Ffestiniog isn't always known to be great, but that view looks just as good in the misty rain as it does in sunshine.

Windsor Fields - Pontyclun RFC

Abercwmboi aren't the only Welsh ground with a stellar clubhouse vantage point.

The home of the Badgers has a clubhouse which provides a comprehensive view of the pitch - an essential for a great matchday experience.

BORDER PARK - TREFF-Y-CLAWDD RFC

It's not going to be a short trip for many clubs to get to Border Park because, as the name suggests, it's situated right on the border between Wales and England.

But the journey to Knighton is worth it. The setting is idyllic.

Tref-Y-Clawdd's Border Park

TYNEWYDD RM PARK - TREHERBERT RFC

One of the more uncompromising grounds around, the sign above the entrance to the playing surface that reads 'Welcome to Hell' kind of sets the tone for your afternoon!

However, the home of the Devils is set at the foot of the Rhigos Mountain, providing a pretty good backdrop.

GLAN YR AFAN PARK - BLACKWOOD RFC

Just a very solid rugby ground. The colours that frame the pitch are striking, the surface is good and the stand is of a good size. With the clubhouse at one end as well, it's all there for you.

LASGARN VIEW - GARNDIFFAITH RFC

The word unforgiving springs to mind. On a mountain between Pontypool and Blaenavon, 'The Garn' is pretty exposed to the elements and the wind whips through more often than not.

Stunning views, mind, and was also the scene of a famous Welsh Cup upset when they beat Bridgend.
