The Michelin Guide has struck gold in Wales again as it names one of our favourite seaside towns as one of the "best for food lovers".

Penarth has scored a highly coveted spot in the food bible's 10-strong list of best seaside places to eat out of the whole of the UK and Ireland. The Vale of Glamorgan town sits alongside Brighton, Margate, Port Isaac and Greystones in County Wicklow as the places to get Michelin-level dining a stone's throw from the sea.

Complimenting Penarth as "bucking the trend with a flourish" for its location within walking distance of Cardiff, Michelin praised it for having its own identity and two restaurants that put the place "on the culinary map".

The Guide writes: "There arent many seaside towns that can say theyre in walking distance from a capital city, but Penarth bucks that trend with a flourish.

"Accessed from Cardiff via a short drive or a long and scenic walk (definitely the best option if you love a sea view), the town has an identity of its own that ticks off key seaside boxes with its pier, pebble beach and esplanade.

"Less than 10 minutes walk from the seafront, youll find a pair of restaurants that have helped put Penarth on the culinary map."

"The two restaurants referred to are Home, found in the Royal Buildings and which has one Michelin star.

"It's a true family affair from James Sommerin and co where the menu is always a surprise, but the recipes taken from the heart and produce local.

"He and his daughter Georgia craft the refined dishes while other family members help with the service. James regularly pops out of his kitchen to chat with diners and proves a gregarious host, helping to create the sense that you are a guest in his home," explains the guide.

It also praises the Touring Club, from the stable of chef, Bryn Williams.

In the Touring Club you can sit at the bar and watch the chef and bar staff prep and cook your cocktails and food selections, like a front-row seat for dinner.

Serving mostly small plates it is the type of place where you'll sink a few cocktails or glasses of wine and nibble on dishes like devils on horseback, chorizo with mustard mayo, roast scallops, and the incredible Swansea crab on toast.

Michelin describes the Stanwell Road spot as a "flexible" eating place and praises the "generously topped Welsh rarebit" and well-priced dishes. For the latest restaurant news and reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here.

Aside of the Michelin-approved places in Penarth, the town's got a cracking collection of food and drink choices not forgetting The Pilot pub for French-influenced pub grub, Mint & Mustard, a solid spot for a brilliant curry and a branch of tapas doyens, Bar 44.
