This PR removes python 2.7 support completely.
Python 2.7 support was deprecated in 1.0.0. In 1.1.0 it will be removed, so if any features are added to develop, this PR should be merged into the develop branch before develop is merged to master.
Do not merge this until just before 1.1.0 release.
