Technically, this is the same bug. The specific known issue is that the colors are lost upon a redraw. If you want those colors for your saved images as a work-around, don't do a show and then save. Save first through savefig().
Thanks , I got it work. One thing which I observed was that the color map is lost only if you put an array to colormap. What is mean is that the color does not disappear when you specify a color like 'r' or something. Even if you have a lot of them.
Correct. The issue is that the collection object tries to recalculate the alpha information to get the depth effects. However, it can't always retain the original colors specified and the colors become gray. Perhaps I can find time today to take another look at this bug.
Ideally, you could try out the branch yourself and confirm that it works for your needs (and importantly, doesn't break anything else), and let us know in the PR whether it works or not. The PR acts as a staging area for users and developers to comment and test out any possible changes. When accepted (that's a more ambiguous process for us...), it gets "pulled" into the target branch (in this case v1.1.x) and the issues are automatically closed.
I tested out the plot with the changes in the art3d file. It works well but the somehow the image quality doesn't look exactly same between the plots. I am not sure behind the reason for the difference.
It would work best to comment at the Pull Request. Also, I need a more detailed description regarding the change in quality (resolution? aliasing? colors wrong?). Preferrably an image for before and after that I could compare.

Finally got some time to look at this again. I originally didn't see the difference, but now I do. What you are seeing is the application of the alpha-indicated depth. In other words, when a marker is farther away from the viewer, it is made more transparent to give it a sense of depth. Before the fix, the alpha value was getting set incorrectly. This is correct behavior.

Fix scatter3d bug

PR #762 should fix this bug. Turns out it was very simple to fix, I just didn't understand ScalarMappables back when I originally investigated this.

Thanks a lot, so is the fix been updated or I need to wait for the PR to be confirmed ? I'm new to git so don't know exactly how it functions.
